- took computer science at Southern Oregon State College. learned to program in basic, cobol, fortran, pascal and a couple other useless skills. I programmed cobol on a card punch machine. loading a program meant walking to the other room, finding the right 10 inch reel of tape, or the right shoe box full of cards then putting the tape on a player the size of a refrigerator or running the stack of cards through a machine then waiting for the cpu to process it usually took about five minutes. if you made a mistake in a cobol card program you usually got a "fatal error" which I always thought was a little harsh for just leaving out one character of text. a mouse was something you set traps for in the computer center. cool graphics meant your crt displayed orange text instead of grey. so now I want to learn.
